The Weakness of Art
Weak things conquer strong things. Mahatma Ghandi conquered the most powerful nation on earth with love and forgiveness. Nelson Mandela used the very same weapons to overthrow Apartheid in South Africa. Martin Luther King won huge victories for the Civil Rights Movement as police beat innocent protesters on the bridge to Montgomery. The naïve thought they were too weak to fight back. But when America saw on their TV screens the blacks being beaten with clubs and bitten by police dogs, suffering for a vision of an America where people of every race and color and ethnicity would be equal under the law, people began to wake up and say, “This is wrong, this has to change.”
It’s like the true power in this world is not political might or armies or police with dogs. The real power is hiding in weak things like love and forgiveness. And art.
Some people scoff at art, calling it mere wall decorations. “Artists are crazy people who believe their art is grand and powerful and somehow supposed to change the world.”
If it appears that darkness is winning because they hold the positions of power, don’t be dismayed. Maybe there’s a power out there Ask God to show you the unseen realm, where His kingdom rules supreme. This kingdom is growing in the earth, and will one day rule the nations. Not ambitious Christian politicians, but a Lamb leading an army of meek and humble worshipers, people who love those who hate them. The beauty of such love will save the world.
